Quick answer Sign in and check your profile's status first. Only verified profiles show on Maps and Search, duplicate profiles don't show, and suspended profiles stay hidden until the issue is fixed. If none of those apply, your profile may be live but not ranking, so complete your info, fix your category, and build reviews.
You search your own business name on Google Maps from your shop in Vancouver and nothing comes up. Or it shows when you type the exact name, but not when you search for what you do. These are two different problems with different fixes. This guide walks through the checks in order, starting with the ones that hide a profile completely, and points to the Google help page behind each one.
Step 1: Sign in and find your profile
Google's help page says you must be signed in to the Google Account connected to your profile to find it. Search your business name and city, or search "my business" on Google. If you can't find it at all, you may never have claimed a listing, or it may belong to a different account, such as one a former employee or old web person set up. Track that down before doing anything else.
Step 2: Check that you're verified
Google says only verified businesses can show their business info on Maps and Search. If your profile still shows a "Get verified" button, finish verification. Google decides which methods you're offered, such as phone or text, email or video, and recommends video if you're eligible. After you submit, Google says review can take up to 5 business days. If the "Get verified" button comes back later, Google couldn't fully verify you and you'll need to try again.
Step 3: Look for a duplicate profile
Google allows one Business Profile per business. Its help page says a profile marked as a duplicate won't show on Google Search or Maps. This often happens after a move, a name change, or when someone made a second listing instead of claiming the first. Search Maps for your name, phone number and old address. If you find a second verified profile owned by someone else, you can request ownership. Google says the owner has 3 days to respond, and if they don't, you may get the option to claim it.
Step 4: Check for a suspension
Google says profiles that break its guidelines can be suspended or disabled and won't show to others until the issue is resolved. You'll get a notice in the Google Account that manages the profile, so check that inbox. Common causes are covered in Google's guidelines, like adding keywords to the business name or showing a home address for a business that goes to customers.
To fix it, correct the problem first, then use Google's appeals tool. Google lists evidence that can help, such as a business license, official business registration, tax certificates, or business utility bills, and says the name and address on those documents should match the profile. Two warnings straight from that page: don't create a new profile for the same business, and an appeal can only be submitted once, so attach everything before you submit.
Step 5: Give new profiles and edits time
If you just set up or verified, wait. Google says rankings for new businesses can take up to a month to appear in search results, and changes to your info can take up to 3 days to show. Making lots of edits during that time doesn't speed it up.
Step 6: If it shows by name but not for your service
If your business appears when you type its name but not when someone searches "dentist" or "roof repair," your profile is live. It just isn't ranking for that search. Google says local results are mainly based on three things:
- Relevance: how well your profile matches the search. Pick the most specific main category, list your services, and complete every section.
- Distance: how far you are from the person searching. A searcher in Battle Ground may see different results than one in downtown Vancouver, and you can't change where you are.
- Prominence: how well known you are. Google says this includes things like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have.
Google also says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. So the work is the same for everyone: accurate info, real photos, steady honest reviews, and replies to those reviews.
A quick checklist
- Signed in to the right Google Account
- Profile verified, no "Get verified" button
- No second profile for the same business
- No suspension notice in the account's inbox
- Name matches your sign, with no extra keywords
- Most specific main category, hours and services filled in
- Waited up to a month if the profile is brand new

Google's help page says rankings for new businesses can take up to a month to appear in search results, and edits to your info can take up to 3 days to show.
Can I pay Google to rank higher on Maps?
No. Google says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Ads are a separate, paid product.
Should I make a new profile if mine was suspended?
No. Google's appeal page says not to create a new Business Profile for the same business. Fix the issue and use the appeals tool.
